Airbnb
Founded in 2008, Airbnb is now a household name. Pretty much anyone can advertise their space on Airbnb – whether it’s a spare room within their own home, an entire property or a unique space such as a log cabin, yurt, castle or eco home. Airbnb reach is impressive with over 7 million places to stay in 100,000 cities and 191 countries. To date, over 260 million guests have stayed in an Airbnb.

Booking.com
Established in 1996 in Amsterdam, Booking.com has grown from a small Dutch startup to one of the world’s biggest travel e-commerce companies. The Booking.com network also includes the Priceline, Kayak and Agoda travel brands. Its property portfolio is vast and includes everything from apartments, holiday homes and family-run B&Bs, to 5-star luxury hotels and resorts, tree houses and even igloos. On Booking.com, guests cannot rent individual rooms or portions of a property, like they can with Airbnb.

Although the platform is best known for its traveller reviews, it covers two segments: hotel and non-hotel travel products (attractions, restaurants and holiday rentals). There are over 1,060,000 hotels/accommodations listed on the site, along with 835,000 holiday rentals. TripAdvisor was one of the earliest adopters of user generated content, and has since become the go-to site for traveller reviews, Q&As and interactive travel forums.

Expedia
Launched in November 1998, Expedia is a travel booking website owned by Expedia Group, with around 590K properties and 1.5M online bookable holiday rentals. The Group has acquired a significant number of well-known travel fare aggregator websites and travel search sites including CarRentals.com, Egencia, CheapTickets, Expedia.com, HomeAway, Hotels.com, Hotwire.com, Orbitz, Travelocity, Trivago and vacationrentals.com. Expedia also offers a range of complimentary travel products like car hire, flights, cruises and activities in addition to hotel and accommodation options.
