Blockbuster movies filmed in Scotland

Scotland’s landscape and cities have starred in many Hollywood movies. We take you on a journey around some of the most iconic film locations in Scotland and recommend where to stay to see them all!

Avenger's Infinity War - Edinburgh

The only location used outside the studio for filming, Edinburgh’s stunning Old Town was the backdrop for key scenes in Avengers Infinity War. The Royal Mile, Cockburn Street, St Giles Cathedral and Waverley Station all take centre stage as Captain America, Black Widow and Vision battle the evil Thanos for supremacy.

Where to stay - The High Street, Edinburgh

Harry Potter - Glenfinnan

Glenfinnan Viaduct is instantly recognisable to Harry Potter fans, as filming of the second and third Harry Potter books, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban took place here. Who can forget the sight of the Hogwarts Express crossing the viaduct and calling in at Glenfinnan?!

Where to stay - The Caledonian Cabin

The Da Vinci Code - Rosslyn Chapel

Rosslyn Chapel became famous thanks to Dan Brown’s international bestseller, The Da Vinci Code, which was made into a movie in 2006. The mysterious and atmospheric Rosslyn Chapel was the location of some intense scenes featuring stars Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou, who were investigating a murder at Notre Dame and followed a trail of clues that led them to Rosslyn. Movie fans from around the world flock to visit this incredible location, and you can too.

Where to stay - Mauldslie Hill Cottage

This beautifully restored, contemporary farm cottage is just a few minutes drive from Rosslyn Chapel. It’s located on a working deer farm overlooking the Moorfoot Hills just outside Edinburgh. Skyfall - Glen Etive

Starring Daniel Craig as 007, the action centres around Skyfall House, Bond’s ancestral family home in isolated Glencoe. In a iconic scene from the movie, Bond drives his Aston Martin under brooding skies along a windswept, desolate road surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. This was filmed in Glen Etive.

Where to stay - Sithean House

Snow White and the Huntsman - Skye

With its misty skies, ice-blue waters and desolate hills, it’s easy to see why the Isle of Skye was chosen as the backdrop for dark fantasy film Snow White and the Huntsman, starring Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron. Key scenes were shot at The Old Man of Storr, and the Quiraing rock formation also featured as the landscape between the enchanted forest and the snow forest. Skye was also chosen by top director Ridley Scott for his sci-fi masterpiece Prometheus with striking rocky landscape of Storr again taking centre stage.

Bird Song Bothy is just as cute and cosy as its name suggests. Situated in Colbost on the western fringes of the island, the property benefits from stunning views out across Loch Dunvegan. Chariots of Fire - St Andrews

The huge windswept expanse of West Sands in St Andrews was used to portray Broadstairs in Kent for one of the best-known scenes in Chariots of Fire. In the memorable opening scene, runners in white t-shirts race barefoot on the sand as waves break close by. Based on a true story, Chariots of Fire is an Oscar-winning tale of two runners who compete in the 1924 Paris Olympics.

West Sands, St Andrews

World War Z - Glasgow

In 2013, Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt brought Glasgow to a standstill, as he was in town to shoot scenes for World War Z, a dramatic zombie thriller movie. A number of city centre streets and George Square featured in dramatic crash scenes, with Glasgow’s famous architecture, wide roads and grid layout being a dead ringer for the US city of Philadelphia, where the movie is set.

The Dark Knight Rises - The Cairngorms

When the trailer for The Dark Knight Rises was released, The Cairngorms were instantly recognisable as a CIA plane, soon to be hijacked by supervillain Bane, soars across the Scottish Highlands. Parachute stunts for the movie were also filmed in nearby Glenfeshie. The Cairngorms were also chosen for the latest Bond movie – No Time to Die, which is Daniel Craig’s last outing as 007. Filming took place around Aviemore, at Ardverikie House Estate and on the banks of Loch Laggan.
